SDOT FIFA Outreach

Seattle, WA / ONGOING

Background and Purpose
Seattle is preparing to host matches for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, an event expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors and global attention. As part of the city’s broader strategy to ensure safe, sustainable, and accessible transportation during the tournament, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is implementing several major infrastructure projects and outreach initiatives to improve biking access and encourage active transportation, including dedicated bike corrals and protected bike lanes.

Construction of key bike facilities is scheduled for completion before the World Cup begins in June 2026, with phased openings starting in 2025.

The outreach project aims to reduce traffic congestion, promote sustainable transportation, and provide safe, convenient options for fans traveling to and from FIFA events. By expanding bike parking and infrastructure, SDOT is supporting the city’s Vision Zero goals and helping Seattle meet the demands of hosting a global event while fostering a more active, connected community.

These investments are designed not just for the World Cup, but to leave a lasting legacy of improved mobility, sustainability, and public space. The projects aim to ensure that the city remains accessible and welcoming for future events and everyday use.

“I am so excited for visitors and residents alike to experience the good energy of this event in beautiful Seattle. My design highlights our beautiful landscapes and that we welcome all people. I hope people make good memories while they’re here, and I also hope people find the small details in the poster that say so much about who we are in Seattle and Washington.”

Key Components of the Project
  • Expansion of Bike Infrastructure: SDOT is constructing new, protected bike lanes along the central waterfront, notably through the Alaskan Way Safety Project, which will close key gaps in the city’s bike network.
  • Bike Corrals and Event Support: SDOT is also setting up bike corrals-designated, secure parking areas for bicycles-at key locations and event sites. These corrals are intended to accommodate the anticipated surge in bike use during FIFA events, making it easier for fans and visitors to choose cycling as a primary mode of transport.
  • Accessibility and Safety Upgrades: In addition to bike-specific improvements, SDOT is upgrading sidewalks, installing ADA-accessible curb ramps, and enhancing intersection safety with new signals and signage to ensure the network is inclusive and safe for all users.
